Should You Test With ACT or SAT?
ACT or SAT Standardized Tests
Since colleges will allow either the ACT or SAT test scores, as long as there are testing locations near you, it’s really up to the student to decide which test would best suit them.
It’s interesting to note that one test or the other is more popular in different states across the country. In Washington state, the SAT test is the most popular, whereas in Idaho, people prefer the ACT.
Each test caters to different individual strengths, so the student needs to select the one that is the best fit. Which one can you score best on?
So how do you know which one is right for you?
Understanding where each test puts its emphasis and how it works will help you make your choice.
SAT:
- Testing questions may make you think a little harder, due to phrasing which can sometimes be a little tricky.
- Words and vocabulary are very important.
- Testing is broken up into several sections; you will do some math, some critical reading, some writing, then the cycle begins again. For some, this type of format might be distracting.
- Has a 25 minute required writing essay.
- Except in some parts of the math sections, ¼ of a point will be deducted for a wrong answer.
ACT:
- Testing questions are often long, but are more straightforward.
- Includes a testing section on science.
- Has a 30-minute writing essay that is not required.
Requires more advanced math skills, with some knowledge of trigonometry a must.
- No points are deducted for wrong answers.
- ACT testing handles the different sections, (math, critical reading, and writing) all at once, rather than breaking them down.
Both types of testing allow you to choose the set of scores you want to submit to the colleges you apply to.
Students tend to perform better on one style of testing over another. So making the choice that best suits your style can make all the difference in how you score.
