Criteria for Choosing a College
Choosing the college you will attend to prepare for your future is extremely important.
This choice shouldn’t be based on the fact that your best friend is going there, what fraternities or sororities are available or because that’s where “so-and-so” went when they were your age.
It’s not a coin toss, it’s a process!
How do you know which college is the right “fit”?
Begin by researching between 3-5 colleges.
- If you know which field you plan to go into, choose colleges that offer that course of study.
- Look at colleges that are in locations that you might be interested in.
- Don’t blindly listen to people who have labeled a college you are considering – do your own research and make your own decision.
- Don’t limit your future by limiting your vision.
Don’t let cost scare you away. Do your research, apply, then make your decision.
- There are many forms of financial aid that might make college more affordable, such as scholarships, grants and installment plans.
- Explore all your options.
Consider colleges of all sizes.
- Larger schools are great because of all the activities, opportunities and diversity that can be found there.
- Smaller schools are great because class sizes are probably smaller, you may have better access to your professors and the resources you may need.
Take into consideration your own personal preferences.
This is important if you have a desire to attend a college that has a population of a particular minority, religion, culture or background.
Visit as many college campuses as possible.
- This will give you a good feel about housing, atmosphere, campus activity and scholastics.
