Every college takes its cost, subtracts your family’s Student Aid Index, and calls the difference “need.” Lower SAI, more aid. Most families learn their number months after it could have been changed. Estimate it now.
Maximum need-based eligibility, and likely a federal Pell Grant. Your job is making sure every college’s aid office sees the full picture.
Real need at most private colleges and many publics. This is where timing and positioning move the most money.
Need-based aid is unlikely at most schools. Merit aid is the game, and the list of colleges matters more than the FAFSA.
The SAI replaced the Expected Family Contribution in 2024. It is calculated from your income, assets and household size, and for 2027-28 there is no longer any protection on parents’ savings. The formula counts 12 percent of reportable assets as available income, but after the assessment brackets the real effect on your SAI is between 2.64 and 5.64 cents per dollar saved. Most families are told the scary number, not the real one. Understanding your SAI before you apply is critical. Strategic planning can legally and ethically influence this number. That is what Crystal’s free class is about.
