The Professor’s Road Trip – Beloit College

It was a long drive, but the Professor finally arrived at Wisconsin’s oldest college, founded in 1846, Beloit.
Beloit College is a small school, located about an hour and a half from Chicago, on the southern border of Wisconsin, in of all places, Beloit, WI.
The school has a population of about 1,300, but the city itself has a population of 37,000 so students have ample access to the various cultural accouterments of a large city like a professional symphony and an international film festival, yet the intimacy of a small school. In fact, the average class size at Beloit is 15. The school itself has a beautiful 28 building campus on 40 wooded acres.
Beloit offers more than fifty majors, more than thirty minors, and a number of dual-degree and pre-professional programs. A flexible curriculum, grounded in rigorous study encourages independent research, fieldwork, and collaboration with peers and professors. As a member of the Science 50, International 50, and Business 50 consortia, Beloit is known for training future leaders in science, international relations, and business.
Experiential learning and research define a Beloit education, the hallmarks for which are two Symposium Days each year: one in the fall semester with a focus on international study and research, and one in the spring with a broader scope. On these two days, classes are suspended and selected students present their research to their peers and mentors.
There are more than 100 student-run clubs and organizations on campus, including service groups, a science-fiction aficionados group, and even a yoga club! Beloit has a small Greek System comprised of three fraternities and three sororities.
The Professor is ready to hit the road again. This time he’s heading to Steve Carrell’s alma mater…
